RESEARCH BACKGROUND
The landmark 2015 study in Cell Metabolism identified MOTS-c as a mitochondrial-encoded regulator of insulin sensitivity and metabolic homeostasis. Acting through the folate cycle and AMPK activation, MOTS-c treatment improved glucose tolerance and prevented diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mouse models.
Subsequent work has examined MOTS-c as an exercise-mimetic — its plasma levels rise with physical exercise — and in ageing, since its levels decline with age. It has become one of the most studied mitochondrial-derived peptides in the metabolism literature.
